At the request of Holcim, the climate litigation initiated by Asmania, Arif, Bobby and Edi is now focused on clarifying preliminary procedural matters. In this way, Holcim is delaying a court ruling on its climate strategy and its responsibility as a carbon major.

In October, the Zug Cantonal Court approved the request of Asmania, Arif, Bobby and Edi for legal aid. For the four plaintiffs, this is an important interim step in the continuation of the proceedings against the Zug-based Holcim AG.

Four Indonesians file climate litigation against Holcim

The conciliation hearing in October 2022 concluded without results. Now, four residents of the Indonesian island Pari, the existence of which is under threat, are taking the Swiss cement corporation to court. They are demanding compensation for climate damages they have suffered, a financial contribution to flood-protection measures, as well as the rapid reduction of Holcim’s CO2 emissions.

Four Indonesians file climate litigation: Holcim must take responsibility

Asmania, Arif, Bobby and Edi, four Indonesian fishermen and women filed a civil action on 30 January 2023 against Holcim Group at the Cantonal Court of Zug – where the headquarters of the cement corporation are located. Their home on the Indonesian island Pari is under existential threat from climate change and the rising sea levels which accompany it.

An island demands justice

Climate change is causing sea levels to rise, destroying the livelihoods of the people on the Indonesian island Pari. The Swiss cement company Holcim bears a significant amount of responsibility for this be- cause of its tremendously high CO2 emissions. Four residents are now demanding justice on behalf of the island and have taken legal action against Holcim in Switzerland.
